There are a lot of shawarma places in Dubai. A lot. But there's only one that we drive across Al Barsha for when the craving hits — Sultan Al Arab. It's not fancy, it's not trying to be trendy, and that's exactly why it works.

The bread is warm, the meat is sliced fresh off the spit, and the garlic sauce is the kind that makes you forget you're eating in your car while Zayn naps in the back seat.

Some of the best food in Dubai doesn't need a reservation. It just needs a good appetite and a napkin.

What to order

We always go for the classic chicken shawarma — wrap style, not plate. The ratio of chicken to pickles to garlic to bread is balanced the way a shawarma should be: every bite has all of it, and nothing falls apart halfway through. If you're hungrier, the mixed shawarma is a safe bet. And if you're feeding little ones, the plain chicken portion (no garlic, easy on the sauce) has saved us more than once.

Order it fresh. Eat it warm. This is not the kind of shawarma that improves after sitting in a bag for twenty minutes. The bread softens, the crisp edges go missing, and the whole point disappears. Sultan Al Arab is a "eat it in the parking lot" kind of place, and I mean that as a compliment.

Why it works for us

With a toddler, "nice dinner out" is a gamble. But a quick shawarma pick-up? That's a reliable win. It's fast, it's affordable, Zayn will actually eat it, and nobody has to dress up. We've made it part of our weekend rhythm: park nearby, one of us runs in, and we eat in the car with the windows down.

The staff recognise us now, which is one of those small Dubai joys. They don't rush you, they pack the food properly, and if you ask for extra pickles, they actually give you extra pickles.

The location

Sultan Al Arab restaurant is in Al Barsha, close to the Mall of the Emirates area. Parking is usually manageable, especially if you're picking up. There are a few tables if you want to eat in, but honestly, take-away is the move.
